Precipitation, Cloudiness, and Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR)

CMORPH2 animation

The Climate Prediction Center (CPC) is engaged in the development and applications of observational analyses of global and regional precipitation. These analyses are developed using in situ  measurements, satellite observations, as well as numerical model simulations / forecasts. All these data sets are constructed for historical periods for the quantification of base climate conditions, and updated on a quasi real-time basis to facilitate the monitoring and attribution of weather and climate variations.

Real-Time Monitoring

Observational data sets of precipitation, cloudiness (cloud top temperature), surface air temperature, and oceanic salinity are constructed for the real-time weather and climate monitoring over the globe.

Precipitation Analyses

Global and regional precipitation analyses are derived from observational information, including gauge measurements and satellite estimates. Analyses are produced for historical periods and updated on a quasi real-time basis.

Data & Archives

Access to our observational precipitation, surface air temperature, OLR, and sea surface salinity (SSS) data sets.

Case Studies & Research

Examinations are conducted for our observational products and case studies of precipitation variations in association with major weather and climate events are performed using our data sets.
